Specialized, evidence-based care at IHC East

Evidence-Based OCD Care

OCD can take up hours of your day. Intrusive thoughts, urges and rituals can feel impossible to ignore, and reassurance never seems to last.

At IHC East on East Paris Avenue in Grand Rapids, our clinicians specialize in treating OCD and related disorders. We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard treatment for OCD. With your therapist, you gradually face the thoughts and situations that trigger anxiety, without falling back on compulsions. Over time, your brain learns those triggers aren't the threat they feel like.

IHC holds an institutional membership with the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF), the leading organization for OCD education and treatment standards.

Our Treatment Approaches Include:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Inference-based CBT (I-CBT)

  • Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and ComB for hair pulling and skin picking

  • Family therapy, so parents and partners can support recovery

  • Care coordination with physicians and other providers

Common Questions

How do I know if it's OCD?

OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repeated behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) done to ease the distress they cause. If these take up a lot of your time or get in the way of daily life, a consultation can help sort it out.

What is an ERP session like?

You and your therapist build a list of triggers, from mild to hard, and work through them at a pace that feels challenging but manageable. You're always part of deciding the next step.

Do you treat children?

Yes. We treat children, teens and adults, and we include parents in treatment for younger clients.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. We offer telehealth for clients anywhere in Michigan.

Do you take insurance?

We accept many plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Tricare, Medicare and Medicaid, and we offer self-pay and a sliding fee. Contact us to confirm your coverage.
